To the official International Margaret Cavendish Society website


Launched as an international non-profit organization at the June 1997 Cavendish conference in Oxford (UK), the Margaret Cavendish Society was established to provide a means of communication between scholars worldwide and to increase awareness of Cavendish and her writings.

Members work in such disciplines as English Literature, Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy and the History of Science and reside in the UK, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, India, Israel and Japan.

This site contains current and past newsletters, contacts, information on joining the Society, images, conference details and links to bibliographies, books, e-text and related sites.

Biennial Meeting

Regarding Accommodations There has been a small change in the accommodations for the Conference. If you are planning to stay at the Gem, you must send a check made out to the OSU History Department. Mail to: Lisa Sarasohn, Department of History, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331. There have been 20 rooms reserved for us. Each room is a studio for $45.00 per night. If you are planning to stay at the Gem, please email Lisa as soon as possible. Please send Lisa the check by April 15 or as soon as possible.

Call for Papers: The theme of the conference is Margaret Cavendish and Nature. Abstracts of 300 words on the theme of the conference or related topics are welcome. The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 15th, 2009. Send abstracts to Lisa Sarasohn at LSarasohn@oregonstate.edu.

Local highlights: Corvallis is a lovely college town located in the mid-Willamette Valley, about an hour and a half from the city of Portland. Portland is considered a gem of the American Northwest, with many fine restaurants, spectacular ocean and mountain views, and a host of local activities. Also near Corvallis are the beautiful Pacific coast of Oregon, the majestic Cascades, and the local wine country, which boasts some of the best Pinot Noir in the world.
